Studyladder: Compare two decimals to thousandths

Today for Maths I did Studyladder. In this activity I had to compare decimals to thousands. I got 10 out of 10 questions correct for this task. I think I could compare decimals to ten thousandths next time. 

Studyladder Addition & Subtraction of large numbers

This week for Maths, Mr Ogilvie's group did another session using fake money. We had to partner up to use the column method (written algorithm) to solve a subtraction problem. This time we solved bigger numbers than last time. After we did the column method written, we had to do the same method using the fake money. I learnt that you can do the column method with decimal numbers. I think I need to work on doing my method using the fake money. 

Reading DLO - Comets/Summarising

L.I to summarise. This week for Reading Ngauruhoe did a session together with Group Tongariro. We played a game where you have to answer a question or name something from the text in order to get a dice for your team. In the end you roll all the dice you won, add all the numbers then see who got the biggest number. Our teams were Group Ngauruhoe vs Tongariro. While playing, we answered question before reading, during reading and after. We then had to skim and scan for keywords. I learnt That Comets are made up of Ice, Rock and Dust. I've also learnt that it has 2 tails - Gas and Dust. I think next time I could work on explaining a more detailed explanation for explaining the text. I enjoyed collaborating with Group Tongariro. 

Venn Diagram - Note Taking

L.I To record our information in our own words. Today for Inquiry, Ms Naicker's group did a Venn Diagram for Ancient and Modern Olympics. We used our Note Taking for Ancient and Modern Olympics to create a Venn Diagram. We had to compare and contrast using the facts in our previous task. For our Note Taking we researched about Ancient and Modern Olympics. We had to record the information and write it in our own words. 

Warriors Visit

 This afternoon, Ryan Hoffman and John Palaui from the Warriors team came to our school for a special assembly. At the start of the assembly Alice from DTR, Jorja, Ryan and John had a self introduction. For Ryan and John's self introduction, they had to say their name, position they play in the Warriors and their favourite ice cream flavour. We then started our assembly by spinning a wheel with 4 categories we would do during the assembly. The whole school was divided into 2 teams; Ryan's team and John's team. We each had to choose a chant. For Ryan's team our chant was 'Hofy', and John's teams chant was 'JP'. Our first category was Trivia. For Trivia, we had to shout our team's chant and see who would be the loudest to answer each question. Our second category was Sleep. Like the previous round, we had to shout the loudest for our team to get a point. We had volunteers go up and collect prizes from Ryan and John. Our 3rd round was Hydration. We had students go up and read facts, then sit back down with prizes. Our last round was Belongings. We had to scream our team's chant to get to read and collect prizes from Ryan and John. To finish off our special assembly we took a photo with the whole school including Ryan Hoffman and John Palavi. Our school definitely enjoyed having 2 rugby players from the Warriors visiting our school.

Ancient and Modern Olympics - Lesson 2

This week for Inquiry, Ms Naicker's group did 2 activities. We first Attributed 2 images about the Modern and Ancient Olympics each. When you attribute images you need the link of the webpage you found the photo on, the author of the photo and the license. Our last activitiy was to use the provided web sites to find out 5 interesting facts about the Ancient Olympics. I collaborated with Tiare and Ma'ata. 

Poetry: The Ocean

This week for Writing we did our lesson as a whole class and worked on Poetic Writing. We were divided into groups of 4 then discussed the meanings for a noun, verb an adjective and an adverb. Then we had to list 2 words for a noun, verb, adjective and adverb. We then talked about what noun we would describe for our poetic piece of text. We had to color the nouns blue, the adjectives green, the verb red and the adverb brown. I teamed up with Savelina, Angela and Mele. Our topic was The Woods. Our Writing Must do was to make a poetic piece of text individually using the same method used in our groups. 

Basic Subtraction: Column Method

LI; Add and subtract numbers using the column method. L.I To check our answers using other methods. This week for Maths, Mr Ogilvie's group did Basic Subtraction using the Column Method. For our session we used fake money for our column method. As a group we worked out an equation and checked whether we were right or wrong. For our Must Do we had to answer subtraction equations using the column method, then using other methods to check our answers. Here is an example of the column method being used for one of the equations done in this activity;

Find Draw Animate Act: Comets

This week for Reading, Mr Wong's groups read the text Comets. We had to scan the text for words we didn't know then record them on our group slide. We then split into groups of 2 and took 3 words each from our list. We had to use Find, Draw, Animate Act for each of our words. In Find, Draw, Animate Act, you take a word and choose to either Find a picture showing the meaning of your word, to Draw a picture to show the meaning, An animation to show your meaning or you could make a skit to show the meaning of your word and record it. My partner Sky and I did the words Evaporate, Prior and Curiosity.

Maths: Basic Addition 2 & 3 digit numbers

This week for Maths, Mr Ogilvie's groups did an activity on Transum. We did an activity called Basic Addition with 2 and 3 digit numbers.We had to use the Column method to solve these problems. This week for our Maths session we were given 10,000 dollars (fake). We had to choose what we would buy with that money.We pretended that Harvey Norman didn't give change so we had to give in the correct amount of money for what we wanted to buy. We had to use the column method to get the correct answer. We went to the bank of Ogilvie (fake), then exchanged and borrowed.  For example 12 + 58. 

This is what it would look like in the Column Method:

You add 2 and the 8 which equals 10. Then you move the 10 to the left. Then add 10 + 10 + 50 which then gives your answer 70. To know if the answer is correct you do the place value method. 

How to make a non-polluting car - Reading DLO

This week for Reading, Mr Wong's groups read How to make a Non-polluting car. For our reading session we answered a few questions before, during and after reading the text. For our Must Do task we did a Reading DLO. We had to do a Reading DLO for the text How to make a Non-polluting car. 

Studyladder: Fractions on a number line

Today for Maths, most of LS1have been doing can dos. Can dos are independent tasks that you can do when you've finished your must dos (tasks) or while you're waiting for your group session. I did another can do for fractions on a number line. I did 2 activities for fractions on a number line. The first was the easiest because it had the number line to help me figure out the answer. The second activity was the hardest because there was no number line to help me find out the answer. Some of the questions were estimated, but I still got a 10 out of 10 score. I enjoyed this activity, because I needed to work on my fractions. 

Prototec: Basic Facts Maths

Today for Maths, I did the can do Prototec. I did stage 6 that includes addition and subtraction up to 1000,  addition to 20, subtraction to 20 and the 2, 3, 5, 10 times tables and division. All stages except for the 1000. The 1000 was a bit tricky, but I got a 10 out of 10 score. I think I could keep practicing my basic facts until I'm ready for stage 7. 

Inquiry: Challenge 2, Nutrients

This week for Inquiry, Mr Wong's 'Diet' group did Challenge 2: Nutrients. We were split into 4 groups that each represented the nutrient either Protein, Carbohydrate, Vitamins/Minerals and Fat. We had to read a website about our nutrient then write down about that nutrient in our own words. We had to explain what it does for our body and what foods have these different nutrients. We then looked for images and attributed them. Then our groups did a similar activity to speed dating while doing last term's topic. First we went with group Fat. We had to tell them about our subject, show them what photos, attribute them then put it onto their group slide. We did that with each group until we had 4 slides of Protein, Carbohydrate, Vitamins/Minerals and Fats. I enjoyed doing a similar activity to speed dating because I learnt new things about the nutrients that I didn't know before.

Word Webs: How to make a non-polluting car

L.I: To find related words. This week for Reading Mr Wong;s groups read a new piece of text called 'How to make a Non-polluting car'. We first read through the whole text, then listed words they wanted to find the meaning of. We then worked out the meanings as a whole group. Our must do task was to make a word web for the words we listed during our reading session. A word web is where you find either synonyms or antonyms of a word you didn't know the meaning of from your reading session.We did words like vigorously, elastic, suitable and more. Here is an example: Vigorously means 'In a way that involves being energetic and fierce'. Here is another example of how it could be used in a sentence. The boy ran vigorously around he classroom. 

Writing:Toy Advertisement

Last week for Writing, Mr Wong's writing groups were asked to plan an advertisement for toys that were picked by our teacher. This week's task is to make the advertisement for that toy in our groups. Our learning intention was to be able to use the language features of a persuasive text and use the language features in our brochure (advertisement). The language features in a persuasive piece of text are repeated language eg: GO NOW!!, emotive language eg: capital letters, rhetorial question eg: Are you fed up with your toys breaking? and personal words eg: you, your. 

Blast Off!

This week for Maths, Mr Ogilvie's groups had to play a game called 'Blast Off/Rocketship. The game requires 2 - 4 players, a dice and a rocketship (example above). The idea of the game is to have the numbers smallest to biggest. You roll the dice 15 times until you have numbers smallest to biggest from bottom to top. At the end if you have sucessful numbers you say blast off!Our task was to play this game with players in our game. I played with Nazanin. We both had a draw for the game.  I learnt how to apply knowledge by putting the numbers in order during the game. 

Language features of advertisement - Angari

This past week Te Ika a Maui and Aotearoa group have been talking and finding about the Language Features of advertising sites. Our learning intention was to learn how to recognise, and understand the purpose of advertising (persuasive) language features. For our must do task we made a shared group slide for each group. We had to take a screen shot and explain the different language features in that photo. 

Place Value Houses

This week for Maths, we had to explain how to solve problems using place value. We had to explain how to use place value through addition and subtraction. Our groups had to use shapes to make the reader understand how you could use place value to solve problems. I enjoyed doing this task because it was easy and because I could understand place value houses. I think I could do thousands next time for my place value problems.

Neighbourhood Niggles: Mr and Mrs Fitz

Today for Reading, Mr Wong's groups did session 2 of Neighbour Niggles: Mr & Mrs  Fitzs. For the session, we had to read the text to find answers of a few questions asked. We then made a table for the action and consequence (result) of the hens in the story. Finally for our must do task we had to explain what we did, explain the text, give an example of of what we did and insert a screenshot for the reader. 

Hauora: Challenge 4

Today for Inquiry, we did our final challenge. We had to draw our own Hauora diagram. Mrs Anderson explained what we had to do then we started making our Whare Tapa Wha. 

Hauora: Challenge 3

Today for Mrs Anderson's group, Hauora we did Challenge 3 of our follow up. We had to partner up with someone, then measure both heart rates by feeling the pulse on our wrists. We had to count how many times you felt your partner's pulse beat in 20 seconds. Our whole group did 3 for each partner. Then after measuring our heart rates while resting, we ran across the netball court horizontally. The partner who was running did 2 laps while the other counted the pulse beats in 20 seconds. The partner who ran had to do 2 laps 3 times, then repeated with the other partner. Finally, everyone ran 2 laps at the end and tested our heart rates. We then went back to class and recorded our pulse beats. 

Hauora: Challenge 2

Our topic for this term is the Olympic Games. We did another rotation, like last term's topic, Asia. Our groups were the same but Ms Kirkpatrick's groups from last term are also included in the rotation. For Challenge 2 we had to answer what hauora meant to us as a group and to explain what we did while building our houses, using the 4 walls, Taha tinana, Taha wairua, Taha whanau and Taha Hingenaro.

Maths: Identifying Place Value - Studyladder

Today for Mr Ogilvie's Maths groups, we talked about how to solve equations both addition and subtraction. We were asked to play a game on Studyladder. We had to identify and type the correct answer.
