Red Crowned Cranes are a type of bird. They are tall birds that grow up to 150 cm. The scientific name for Red Crowned Cranes is Grus japonensis.
The Red Crowned Cranes are known to be the heaviest species of cranes in the world. Another name for Red Crowned Cranes is Japanese Cranes.

Red Crowned Cranes look different from other species of crane. Japanese cranes have white body feathers. They are called red crowned cranes for their red feathers on top of their heads. They have long black beaks, black legs, neck and bottom.

Red Crowned Cranes eat a variety of food.
They eat insects, seeds, small fish, frogs and leaves. As well as reeds, grass, corn and waste grains. They find most of their food in the  wetlands.

Red Crowned cranes are mostly found in the Asian continent. Most of them live in Russia, China, Japan and Mongolia. You can find some cranes in Africa, but it is very rare for Red crowned cranes to live there. They are mostly found in marshlands and wetlands.

Predators
Many Cranes are at risk of extinction. The dangers that face Red crowned cranes are foxes, wolves, large birds (golden eagles), bird of prey and raccoons.

When breeding Japanese Cranes normally lay two eggs, but only one survives to adulthood. They are mostly well known for their beautiful dancing.
